Dike Ajiri

Dike Ajiri has been the Chief Executive Officer of Mobile Doctors since 2000, and has been with the company since 1995. Mobile Doctors makes house calls to geriatric patients in the states of Illinois, Indiana and Michigan. Mr. Ajiri received his B.Sc. degree in Business/Entrepreneurship from Miami (Ohio) University.

Mr. Ajiri was diagnosed with PSC in 2002. He serves on the board of PSC Partners Seeking a Cure so he can actively help in seeking a cure for PSC. Mr. Ajiri’s board responsibilities include coordinating volunteers, participating on the Investment Committee and leading the PSC Partners email communications.

Mr. Ajiri enjoys playing tennis and thinks his body will be able to withstand one or two more rugby games next year. Mr. Ajiri has a wonderful wife, Rilee, and two small boys, Jaxon and Elijah. Dike can be reached at: volunteers@pscpartners.org

Lee Bria

Lee Bria received her BS degree from Quinnipiac University and practiced as a Registered Physical Therapist in Connecticut and Massachusetts. Ms. Bria met her husband Dr. William Bria, a pulmonary critical care specialist, while working as a Chest Physical Therapist at Massachusetts General Hospital. Ms. Bria’s older son, Bill went off to college and became ill the second semester of his junior year. The Brias were devastated to learn that he had UC and PSC. The diagnosis came in May of 2004 and by June of 2005, Bill continued to suffer greatly. It was a very difficult year. While all this was happening, Ms. Bria started working with Ricky Safer and Dr. David Rhodes on the very first PSC Partners Seeking a Cure conference, which was held April, 2005. Ms. Bria’s son was in crisis and all she wanted to do was raise the money needed for the research that would lead to a better treatment for PSC. Today Ms. Bria is still passionate about raising research dollars to brighten the future of PSC patients.

Tom Butler

Tom Butler has 28 years of finance, accounting, and taxation expertise in a broad range of industries from high tech to non-profit. Tom received his Bachelors Degree in Commerce from the University of Virginia and a Masters Degree in Financial Management from the University of Maryland University College. He is an Enrolled Agent, the only tax professionals licensed directly by the Internal Revenue Service. Tom is a member of the National Association of Enrolled Agents, the Virginia Society of Enrolled Agents, and is a Fellow of the National Tax Practice Institute, one of only 2,000 tax practitioners nationwide to receive such a designation.

For seven years he built an award-winning accounting practice in northern Virginia while fighting a lengthy battle with PSC. Monthly hospitalizations eventually forced him to leave the firm as the devastating effect of PSC entered its final stages. He and a partner started Acumen Accounting, Inc., late in 2008, shortly before Tom received a life saving living donor liver transplant in December. Tom’s supportive family includes his wife Kathy and young adult sons, Michael and Joe.

Tom credits PSC Partners with helping him prepare for transplant, giving opportunities to assist others with this disease, and building dozens of new, lifelong friendships. He is honored and privileged to serve as the treasurer of PSC Partners.

Dr. Greg Everson

Dr. Greg Everson is currently Professor of Medicine and Director of Hepatology at the University of Colorado, Denver. Dr. Everson’s clinical and research interests encompass a wide range of topics in Hepatology and Liver Transplantation. Dr. Everson has authored several patient-help books, Living with Hepatitis C: A Survivor’s GuideLiving with Hepatitis B: A Survivor’s GuideLiving with Hemochromatosis, and over 300 manuscripts, editorials, and book chapters. Dr. Everson received his B.S. degree in Chemistry from the University of North Dakota and his M.D. degree from Cornell Medical College. Dr. Everson’s post-doctoral training included a residency in Internal Medicine at Creighton University, Omaha, NE, and a fellowship in Gastroenterology at the University of Colorado. Dr. Everson is a fulltime, member of the faculty of the Department of Medicine at the University of Colorado. Dr. Everson has experience with other boards and patient support groups, such as the American Liver Foundation, and the HepC Connection. He became involved with PSC Partners because Ricky and Don Safer convinced him that the foundation would become a reality and help patients and families.
Rachel Gomel

Rachel Gomel’s commitment to PSC Partners began in 2008 when she attended the Jacksonville conference. Rachel holds a Master’s degree in English Literature from McGill University, Montreal, Canada. Her Ph.D. work at McGill University was cross-disciplinary (in Philosophy of History, Comparative Literature, and Literary Criticism) and earned her three Canada Council awards. She left McGill University shortly after her third child was born.

She has been involved in many community projects and in teaching literature. She was on the board of the Atwater Children Libraries that serve underprivileged sections of Montreal. During her eleven years as volunteer and four years as head of the local YMCA Advisory Board, she ran a youth swim team, organized self-help workshops and conference series for the public. Rachel organized city-wide running races to bring awareness and funds to the special needs of single moms with special-need children. Over the years, she has advised and mentored many college-bound young people. Her husband, three children and their families are the center of her life.

Joanne Grieme

Joanne Grieme’s son was diagnosed with PSC at the age of 15. It was only a year and a half after his diagnosis that he received a liver transplant. There was no local support for the Griemes and very little information to be found. Shortly thereafter, Ms. Grieme co-founded the Allegheny Division of the American Liver Foundation. Ms. Grieme has served as treasurer, board member, and now serves as President of the Alleghany ALF.

Although Ms. Grieme wants to help all those with liver disease through support, education, and raising funds for research, her heart is focused on PSC. Ms. Grieme’s position with PSC Partners gives her the opportunity to help in the fight against PSC. Ms. Grieme spends much of her time volunteering, but continues to work in her established family business in the aviation industry. Ms. Grieme was selected as a Community Champion for her local non-profit work and also received the 2008 Tribute to Excellence award from the American Liver Foundation. Ms. Grieme’s family is a very big part of her life, and includes husband Steve, two sons (Scott and Todd), daughter (Marcy) and family dogs.

Scott Malat

Scott Malat’s wife was diagnosed with PSC in 2005. Mr. Malat and his wife found themselves faced with a scary problem that they knew nothing about. Information about the disease was extremely hard to find and what information they did find only added to their stress. The Malats decided to attend the PSC Partners conference in Pittsburgh and found it was truly a life-changing experience. Mr. Malat jumped at the chance to work with the extraordinary people that they met, and help find a cure. Mr. Malat hopes to use his experiences in business and finance to help the organization to continue to grow.

Mr. Malat is currently a Vice President at Goldman, Sachs & Co, and works as the senior equity research analyst covering the transportation sector. Ricky Safer

After having led the life of a health nut for decades, Ricky Safer was shocked to receive her PSC diagnosis in 2003, and then to discover that there was little accurate information or support available for PSC patients. Still reeling from her recent diagnosis, Ms. Safer decided she didn’t want to wait around to see if things would improve. In 2004, with the help of her family, her hepatologist (Dr. Everson) and two friends from the support group (Lee Bria and David Rhodes), Ms. Safer co-founded PSC Partners Seeking A Cure. Ms. Safer’s years of volunteering with CCFA locally and nationally and her position on the board of the Donor Awareness Council provided her with the background to get PSC Partners Seeking a Cure off the ground. Ms. Safer has served on the Nutritional Panel for CCFA, and also received the CCFA Sigman award.

Ms. Safer feels extremely lucky to have her family as her loyal support group and constant helpers. One of her greatest joys is spending time with her family—her husband (Don), daughter and son-in-law (Elissa and Steven), son and daughter-in-law (Adam and Sue), and grandkids (Sam, Lily, and Rowan). Ms. Safer enjoys her role as President of PSC Partners, and continues to be passionate about finding a cure for PSC, and making life better for all PSCers. In Ms. Safer’s other life, she teaches foreign languages and provides cross-cultural training at the University of Denver. Ms. Safer received her B.A. in French with honors from the University of Michigan, and her Master of Arts in Teaching from Johns Hopkins University. Ricky can be reached at contactus@pscpartners.org.

Deb Wente

Deb Wente’s daughter, Samantha, was diagnosed with PSC in 2004 at the age of 10. Fortunately, Samantha has been and continues to be primarily asymptomatic. The shock at being handed a pamphlet discussing a life expectancy of 10 years after diagnosis of PSC led Ms. Wente to the Internet. Ms. Wente feels thankful that she quickly found PSC Partners. Soon after that, Ms. Wente and her husband attended the first PSC Partners conference in Denver, just 8 months after their daughter was diagnosed with PSC. Although it was a difficult time, Ms. Wente was pleased to find a role in PSC Partners Seeking a Cure as Treasurer.

A heartfelt thank you to our passionate and dedicated Board of Directors for guiding us in all the major decisions for the foundation.
